Pretty poor to be out twice in one day.

Wouldn't say the Surrey attack is up to much after the opening bowlers but we are making them look like 1950's Surrey here.

Now there's an understatement..

Really pathetic showing and we are getting a track record of it.

Pathetic really does sum it up, other than that I am lost for words, which is a rarity.

The top 3 has been a huge problem all season. It’s the root of all our batting issues. It’s got to be up there as one of the weakest in the country.
Brathwaite got off a plane Saturday, so what were we expecting.
The rest of the season, Davies and Yates haven’t scored runs since the first couple of games I’m pretty sure. Both have been disappointing in red ball this season and last to differing degrees. Rhodes hasn’t looked up to it for the last 2 years either.
Inevitably Hain has done well and dug them out of trouble along with Mousley, Burgess and Barnard at different stages.
No one is asking or expecting 250 without loss every match. But those middle order players coming in at 150/2 after 40 overs would be such a difference. They’d be able to attack the bowling, have bowlers in second or third spells, an older ball.

But too often that top 3 is obliterated within the first 10 overs. So it’s 30 for 3 or 4 after 10, bowlers with a new ball, brimming with confidence in their first spells, tails up, catchers in, and our batsmen are on the back foot not playing their natural game.
And half the time Barnard and Burgess have bowled 20 overs and kept for 70+ overs and they’re back out there inside a session.
It’s set up for the middle order to fail. We need to invest in an overseas number 3 for next season.

Billy Godleman opening the batting for our Seconds today. I guess he's been released by Derbyshire - I wonder if their Batting Coach (one I. Bell) may have suggested we look at him. Belly would know our problems, with opening batsmen!

And Godleman was Captain at Derby last season. Rhodes watch out!?

I just think we need to look at who we have in that top 3 and are they good enough. Current evidence says no.
Yates is way too inconsistent. It’s famine for weeks and then 1 huge innings. I think half his runs this year came in that double century. He has the ability, but not the consistency.
Davies got a century first game then nothing, had an awful 2022, and one of the lowest averages this year. Rhodes hasn’t looked good for a couple of years either.

I’d have an overseas international number 3, similar to the way Surrey have had Sangakarra, Amla or Latham in recent years. Consistent and dependable.
Then you can pick Yates, Rhodes and Davies on form to open. And if they can’t get it done, then that’s when you give a youngster like Khan a go.

We have the talent and the ability in the middle order. They’ve all proven it to some extent. And we’ve got the likes of Bethell, Benjamin, Shaikh, Wylie & Smith behind that for depth.

Some much needed honesty from Ed Barnard:

At least it's not quite as bad as 1953 when Warwickshire won the toss and batted and the match was all over in a day - Warwickshire all out 45 and 52, Surrey all out 146.

Disappointing. But I'm not totally pessimistic. I'm not surprised we're going to lose, Surrey are definitely stronger, but the extent of it is pretty bad. So many batters out twice today with a pair of poor scores just suggests that same mindset problem we've discussed here before. Not performing in the big games.

Having said that. I don't think it will be terrible in the future. For me Rob Yates has been OK this season. Averging 40, tailed a bit going into the white ball season but had a good one day so hopefully back into form. Mousley also OK today, he's improved his career average on the 2nd innings. Away from the Oval, Hamza and Theo Wylie both got 50s to help England youth beat Australia.

It's evidently true that Rhodes and Davies are now in multi-year slumps. Seems the challenge is for them to find a bridge to the younger players coming in and providing the core of the team for 2026 or so.

Not too bad this morning just the 2 wickets in seven balls so far

At what point do the club decide that this is just not acceptable?

At least we have kept the BBC happy. All they ever want to discuss is Surrey, with Yorkshire's recent demise they can wax lyrical until the cows come home now.

Someone needs to follow Ed Barnard’s lead and put their hand up! Doubt that it will happen. Forgive me for going back to the first championship game of the season at Somerset, I still say that we should have won that game, instead we spoke of a “solid” start to the season. It’s a mindset, solid performances or wins? We handed Surrey the initiative this week, before a ball was bowled, and let’s face it, they are a very fine county championship team and do not need any hand outs.

I think the difference in strength of the teams was quite stark when we played Surrey in April

The weird thing is the two counties who can get near them at the moment are Essex and Hampshire and we beat them both in May.

The blocky nature of the season worked in our favour in 2021 but seems.to have scuppered us since the blast phase this year

Let's hope rumours of appointment to view for the Blast and CC are true and we get more of a rhythm going next season and fewer long gaps

Plus looks like we have Worcestershire to look forward to playing hopefully we get two games versus them

Dissapointing to be thrashed so badly and we'll have taken a hit in the table but I don't think anything has changed from before the match. We knew we were a long way behind Surrey and we knew we have a mental, temperament problem in big games.

I like mad's point about Essex and Hampshire being Surrey's main challengers and the fact we beat them. It could be a great ding dong between Warks and those two sides and they're our true benchmarks. Not Surrey. If we've slipped against them (white ball too!!!) then I think it's clear we've deteriorated as the season has gone on. Robinson spoke about KPIs, comparison against Essex and Hampshire could be one.
