Collins Obuya had a good, and long career with the Kenya side, becoming captain towards the end of his career.
He is a long way from been Warwickshires worst ever overseas player.

If we are judging by overall records, both Vihari and Malan could be seen as good choices as overseas players. It's just that they haven't delivered for Warwickshire (so far, in the case of Malan).

I'd say that Vihari made the ex Worcestershire player Adrian Shankar look good!

Bring Michael Clark (crucially Clark without an E) out of retirement

On the bright side, I think we may be seeing more of Sibley next year!

I don't think the major problem is the overseas players. Okay, they've not delivered in the few matches they've played but our own lads have not delivered over significantly longer periods.

Trouble is, the top order are not setting a solid platform for the innings. Constantly relying on the middle/lower order to get the score up to a decent total. The batting points total is poor.

It's a problem we've had for a while now. In the recent past it was Woakes, Barker, Jeets etc who regularly dug us out of holes.

You look today, numbers 1, 2 and 3 have been outscores by 7, 8 and 9. I wonder how many times this year, that has been the case. If you’re going to put up big scores, that can’t be the norm.
Hain and Burgess should have gone on to get 100’s, but we’re so heavily reliant on Burgess, Bresnan and Briggs every innings to dig us out.

This season most of ‘our’ batsmen have made a score of substance (albeit not necessarily a century) however it has not happened consistently. In each match there is one score whilst the others have struggled (I’m not going to say failed as that is a touch strong I feel).

I think we have a right to expect more from an overseas pro, they have been paid to come over and do a specific job. I think Vihari was always going to struggle to adapt with so little preparation but I am disappointed with Malan. He came in and looked like he had the skills but as of yet he still hasn’t made a significant score. There is still time of course but I would hope that any overseas pro will be able to hit the ground running or at least get up to speed within a couple of matches.

Hopefully the second innings will see the big score we all want and he then kicks on for the rest of the season.

Have to see how Derby go on it, might be one of those pitches that plays harder than it looks. I've mentioned on this forum a few times before that our batting is better than it was last year - but there's some huge holes and I think they're mainly psychological. One of Burgess or Hain could have really gone on today and there were others who got out just as they were getting in.

The batting is an odd one, everyone has made decent runs/scores, apart from Malan, but nobody has really dominated. Nobody has looked disastrous but nobody has looked anything like a banker though.

We've also played on some real tough pitches.

I think the point about dominating the bowling is a good one. It’s a cliche but you’ve got to earn the right as a team to do that. 1-3 possibly 4 as well have to blunt the attack, get them into 3 or 4th spells, then 4/5/6/7 can attack weary bowlers. But our 4/5/6/7 are endlessly rebuilding when we’re 30-2 or 50/3. Lamb, Burgess and Bresnan are capable of going at a good rate and putting the pressure on the bowlers. But they can’t if they’re having to rebuild, and make sure there’s not a collapse. That makes it difficult to build really big partnerships as they spend a lot of time at the wicket defensively, and you build big scores with big partnerships. The lack ofwhich is reflected in our scores.

I called for Miles to be the one to miss out if Woakes was available but he's proving me wrong so far.

Interesting that Rhodes brings himself on before Bresnan now.

Just watched the five overs after lunch and its moving miles. OHD in particular seems to be struggling to control it, though, and Miles looks the more threatening - two wickets after all. That lack of accuracy might explain why we keep failing to finish teams off. Really important to be accurate if the attack is pretty much exclusively right arm medium. Willing to be corrected if this is an OHD aberration.

This is the match for me. 6 down, a lead of 177. No excuses not to have at least 100 run lead.
If they can run through the tail sharpish, it gives them over a day to bat to build an unreachable target, and still be able to put Derbyshire in for an hour on day 3 and have the whole of day 4 to bowl them out.
