Didn't notice that. Garton was about though.

The commentators were talking up Garton and attempting to get him on comms. Didn't speculate, as far as I could hear, about whether he would play in cc though.

Think Sussex hung on in there really well, especially as it looked like Hain and Barnard were getting on top. It's a fairly flat pitch but it has some pace and bounce in it. Crocombe and Sandhu looked sharp and Robinson's probably a bit quicker than our guys too. Carson gets good dip and is a genuine threat to left handers but looked like a pie bowler at right handers. Bizarre.

Would have been interested to see how Simmons got on here with a pitch that might have aided his pace and hostility as opposed to pudding pitch he gets at Edgbaston. Short ball at the body seemed to work today at times.

Yates looked good, particularly through the offside (catch to dismiss him was a stunner) and the skipper looked in good touch too. Latham's innings was painful, he's not really looked in nick at all to be fair but he finds a way to hang around. Zen got a good one but I'm surprised Mousley didn't play off the back of his Lions performances. Hain and Barnard showed that you really can cash in against the old Kookaburra ball as it goes soft.

Rapid outfield with fairly short boundaries.

Lovely day at Hove today with a large, enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowd in which created a nice atmosphere. My first visit to this ground. Exciting.

Also saw Jofra Archer on a scooter.

Agree with this.
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I might have thought that the comment about Jofra Archer on a scooter might have come after one too many pints of Sussex ale.

There was a conversation on here a few games back about lower order runs and how there is a general trend for lower order batsmen and teams to score more runs than they used it. Well it doesn't seem to apply to us!

Ha yes the dark ages! I do keep thinking about that but thought would be naughty to post!

Commentators have just stated that Malik will be withdrawn if Bethell is released from the test squad.

That will significantly improve the team.

Yup,

I was thinking that yesterday. For left arm spin purposes as well. Malik did hit one beautiful off drive but I'm not sure he's really got the temperament for this level. It was him I mainly had in mind when I made the comment about lack of confidence.

(Revisiting this confidence point, I think it totally doesn't apply to Barnard and Hain, who looked very at-ease when batting together).

Last 6 wickets fell for 76

Long weak tail so it came as no surprise to me. We are what we are, I will be happy to end up mid table at best, don't think we will go down, but we are not good enough to challenge at the sharp end. However, Warwickshire are my county and have been since I first watched them live at Nuneaton 65 years ago, so I continue to back them, perhaps more in hope than anticipation.

Sussex going at 4 an over already, its looking ominous for the rest of the day. We really need a couple of wickets after lunch to put the brake on.

Agreed but we scored at nearly 4 an over throughout our whole innings. Unfortunately it's just the way it is with the weather and the ball in use.

Garton due to talk to commentators soon.

What is frustrating is that by the close if they haven't lost too many wickets, they could only be 100 so behind our score and a lead would see us trying to bat out for a draw. If you introduced someone to cricket with them having no knowledge of the game whatsoever, they would wonder why they were watching it and what the whole point was. This game might produce a positive result but I would be surprised if it was us who won it.

Sounds like Rushworth is crocked again after three overs. His body simply isn't up to the rigours of first class cricket. Simmons needs to play going forward.

Rushworth needs to be added to the list taking a paid holiday at the clubs expense.

Unchanged test team announced, but non selected players are not being released.
Makes the decision to omit Mousely even more of a mistake.

Seemed to take us too long to get the spinners on.

A couple of wickets now so who knows.

Davies seems to play unthinking cricket by numbers!

Agreed, I'd already stated on a different thread that I would expect him to leave at the end of the season - I am now 100% convinced he won't be playing next year. Sadly it seems his body gave up on him over a year ago.

Edit - have we already nominated who Bethell will come in for and if so, can that change for Rushworth?

See Highvelds post above, Bethells not going to be released.

England aren't releasing either Bethell or Archer now. But as comms yesterday put it, there was a named player they had to come in for, in our case it was Malik.

Anyone watching - have Sussex looked in any danger, were they giving any chances?
