Another top order failure. Davies is not an opener in the 4 day format - probably more suited to the white ball format. The bowling is looking mediocre - is the departure of Welch the difference? I wish they'd have appointed AD as the bowling coach....apparently he applied for the role?
We're really going backwards this season, which is a big disappointment after the highs of last year.

I doubt that the departure of Welch is the sole cause of the poor bowling performances, although I'm sure that it's contributing a bit. Perhaps last season our bowlers collectively over-performed, or maybe the conditions are less favourable this season? I can't remember what the conditions were like at the start of last season but it's been pretty dry this year so far. At this point in the year last season we had played 6, won 2, drawn 3 and lost 1, so if we can draw this one the only difference will be one extra draw instead of a win. Of course, with the different format this year that leaves us much further behind and with a lot more to do in the second half of the season. I suspect that the break in the championship for the Blast has come at a good time for us.

You tell could from the reaction of the Yorkshire fielders they couldn't believe that sequence of deliveries from Thompson to Davies and then to get him out they were absolutely cock a hoop. The fielding side will always feel as though they are in the game with him at the crease.

Current batting and bowling averages
https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=14444;team=1479;type=tournament

The one of most concern is Rob Yates, when his one good innings is discarded he is averaging under 10 per innings, the equivalent for Davies is c14.5
both are well below what is acceptable for a specialist batsman.

My issue with the Davies situation is I don’t think he should be moved to the middle order as some are suggesting.
Now Rhodes has found some form, you’ve got Hain, Rhodes, Lamb and Burgess as our in form consistent players. I wouldn’t want to mess with that. So he could drop to 3, but we know that makes little difference. So for me, he either opens or is dropped. He was recruited and paid a lot to be an opener, so he either opens or loses his place. I don’t like the idea that he’s undroppable, and we should shuffle everyone else round to accommodate him. Especially after his spineless display in the second innings yesterday.

When Davies plays exactly the same way over and over again and keeps failing then you have to question his place in the team. Surely the idea is to learn from your mistakes but he is not.

We are in danger of repeating the situation we had a few years ago, when mediocrity was allowed from some experienced players and deneying young players the oportunity to show they were capable of playing at first team level. Currently neither Davies or Yates are performing at a level that justifies a first team place.

We have alternatives, fot the next county game I'd bring Jacob Bethell and one of Chris Benjamin or Dan Mousley into the side to replace them.

I agree that it's time to give Jacob Bethell a chance in the four day game. I watched him in his two innings on loan to Gloucestershire and he showed an ideal temperament and technique for the longer game that put to shame not only the rest of the Gloucestershire side but also some of the Bears' batsmen this season - no need to name the names, the averages tell the story.

197-3(91) and Hain/Rhodes are doing an amazing job batting for about 78 overs. Makes you realise that it must be a decent batting surface and we just underperformed in the first innings.

I've seen Bethell plays top order in 2nd team white ball, is he capable of doing up the order in four day? Funny how your perceptions change, last week I was against it, this week I think it's worth a shot. I was shooting the breeze with some Lancs fans on the Guardian back end of last year. They were of the opinion Davies shouldn't be opening in red ball. I have a bad feeling he moved here because we said he could open as much as he liked...

Congratulations to both Will Rhodes and Sam Hain for their hundreds.
I don't think I've ever seen two batsmen on 99 at the same time.

It’s so annoying that we can do this in the second innings, but other than Burgess, the first innings where you can set the win up, passed us by.

Bat like this first innings and who knows how this goes. Wasn’t too dissimilar last year, but the bowling often made up for a multitude of first innings batting issues.

An honourable draw!

Take the draw. Move to the T20 for a bit. But it’ll be interesting to see if there’ll be any changes at the top of the order and with the bowling when red ball returns.

Think there'll be some changes by June. Dan Mouseley will be back by then for a start. Wonder if McAndrew will stick around for the later games. I know he's scheduled to but theres always circumstances change etc... I must say I do like the fact he keeps running in and might be a long term project for Warwickshire

And the pitches will be a factor. If it stays largely dry might be handy to have an all rounder with the ability to spin the ball so Bethell and/or Lintott may come into the equation then bring Miles back if it's expected to swing round corners at Southampton aka Keith Barkershire

Hats off to Hain and Rhodes for batting all day. Okay, not the most challenging conditions they'll ever face but to not lose a wicket is a great effort. I was so nervous for Rhodes in the 90s; I think he edged one short of slip on 98 and my heart was in my mouth.

I’m not sure about the conditions not being challenging. The cloud hardly lifted all day, Yorkshire were aggressive throughout and there was a particular spell from Hall and Revis with the new ball which had Hain on his back as well as the pair of them bobbing and weaving like boxers for about 15 minutes. Yorkshire were up for this but perhaps made the mistake of starting the day believing - as their crowd did - that the result was in no doubt.

The Yorkshire players were welcomed onto the pitch this morning as a team that had already won. Odd really. However, this was one of the best day’s cricket I’ve witnessed for quite a while....maybe since last September!!

There cannot have been many days where a side batted for so long having 3 wickets down and saw out 76 overs without any further loss. A lesson in concentration for others to follow.

Well done to Sam Hain and Will Rhodes! It shows what a bit of application can achieve. I can see Hain on England's radar soon if he keeps this up. If he was playing for Surrey, Kent, Sussex etc., the media would most definitely be pushing it!
