Somewhat unsurprisingly, Ashley Giles is leaving as Director of England Cricket. The Ashes shambles is not just his fault by any means but he did take the decision to make Silverwood Lord-High-Everything and that has been a failure. It was Giles' decision so he carries the can.

We know the KoS is basically a good guy so he'll pop up again somewhere soon. The ECB have still got a lot of work to do, though.

Times radio last night were suggesting that Silverwood and Thorpe will be released soon too.

As a batting coach Thorpe has done nothing to improve the England players, but the same was true of Gouch and Ramprakash too.

Time for the ecb to appoint a batting coach who doesn't come from Essex or Surrey.

Step forward Tony Frost - or maybe not.

Understandable decision to dismiss first Giles and now Silverwood. Feel a bit sorry for both men though, some of the press have portrayed them as idiots but they have very good records at Warwickshire and Essex and Giles even managed to get a tune out of Lancashire. Plus England is a tough job, success for the one day side is "all down to Morgan" & the domestic structure for Test cricket is set up to fail.

Giles is an uninspiring figure who never gives any indication of ever having thought outside the box. Silverwood simply isn't good enough for the position he was appointed to. Yes they've had some success at CC level but in the end they were badly over-promoted. It happens.

Thorpe has now been removed from his role, a poor coach & a very poor leadership figure.

Time for a new coaching staff, not recruited from Essex or Surrey.

As good as we might expect for a temporary stint so fair enough. I doubt if he'll get it full time though; I think Strauss is going to be more ambitious.

This somewhat curious role now passes to Rob Key on a free transfer from Sky TV.

"Mr. Key, you were asked, like all the other candidates, what you thought of The Hundred.
Is it:

  • the best competition in world cricket
  • the finest preparation for England's Test cricketers
  • the financial salvation for English cricket
  • the best sponsorship deal in sport
Other candidates took it as a multi-choice question and ticked just one box but you ticked all four.
    So when can you start?"

Echoing the fact that the Bears' new Head of Media need not love cricket, it's interesting to note that the ECB ad for the new England white ball coach says that it is only desirable (but not essential) to have 'international and/or First Class/Domestic white ball coaching experience.'
