Would really like to see Simmons get a go. He might be young and a bit wayward but I’ve heard he’s apparently express pace, which is useful at any level.

Yes, I hope Simmons gets a game. He could shake up a few batters.

Maybe

I'd go with that, with the possible exception of Amir Khan in instead of Shaikh. AK looks to be a massive talent and still so young.

If in, this could be a make or break game for Manraj. Like George Garrett, he's in the last chance saloon. He's had a rubbish year for the Seconds and is going nowhere fast.

Hamza Shaikh does indeed play. Garrett in for Miles. But Kai Smith still plays meaning it’s very tight for bowlers.

Norwell, OHD and Pandya the only recognised top quality bowlers. Then other 20 from Rhodes, Brookes, Yates and maybe even Lamb if needed.

Crazy decision again about Smith. Just what is the point ?! He's not even being given a bash at keeping wicket. And Simmons is not in. I can understand (a bit), Garrett being given another chance, but relying on only 3 front line bowlers, puts enormous pressure on Rhodes, GG, Ethan B and Yates - and (certainly in the case of Yates at the Oval) that has backfired a lot this season.

Anyone watching this? 310 is OK I suppose but the rate of scoring was very linear, wickets fell in small clusters and only a few runs off the last over? Slow pitch?

Slow wicket plus high tempretures and humidity make batting hard work

Pitch only looked to be getting slower too. Suspect the best time to bat is the new ball, and once the ball gets softer and pace comes off with the spinner it gets much harder.
Hope the bowlers note that, use plenty of cutters and similar deliveries.
You could very obviously see Yates struggle more and more as the innings went on. I suspect partly because it got harder to bat and partly due to the heat.

Is it just me, or has the standard of fielding in the last couple of matches been way down?
Dropped catches let Kimber off last week. And now they’ve dropped 2 now plus some more throws. Could really be the difference.

Well done Mr Garrett, take a big round of applause. We didn't score too well at the end of our innings, from Pandya to Smith, 20 from 29 balls but having young fielders about has made some difference. Not really sure about Norwell to bowl in the last 8 overs but Ollie keeps his head as he so often does.

Another cracking game! I thought we’d lost it at the end there but the wicket of Pujara proved crucial. Fair play to Garrett for holding his nerve! Still undefeated…

Same as Surrey. Should never have gotten that close. It’s like we get to the last 10 overs and forget how to bowl.
Tough slow pitch, and I think we bowled 2 slower balls in that last 10. Loads of full tosses. And Norwell has no variations, so he’s pretty easy pickings.

Excellent win and an excellent game. Beautiful weather.

Definitely a different game once the ball got older. It looked tough to bat at the end of our innings thought Currie took the pace off well. Burgess rode his luck and cashed in and Rob Yates List A record is looking particularly good right now. I thought Hamza Sheikh shaped up well, I liked his confidence.

Yeah Norwell looks a little awkward when bowling around the wicket but i guess he felt compelled to do it as Sussex had 5 left handers in their top 6. Credit to Garrett, he held his nerve well, there were several ropey deliveries being sent down though.

I haven't seen any games this year, either on streams or live, I wait a week today for Middix at Radlett for that, but there seems to be a theme that we don't have bowling resources at the death. That happens if you pick a non-bowler at nine. One specialist bowler has a problem in the middle overs you have to fiddle something later. No surprise there.

As to why Kai Smith is batting at nine and not even keeping is the crux of the problem this season. The competition is set up for development and he's the only emerging player consistently playing. And he's not trusted to do anything. Instead we have Rhodes and Sibley chewing up overs, etc, etc.

I don't really care if we do badly in this competition, indeed I would rather we did badly with some young players coming through, but were playing so so with proven non-white ball players. I haven't got time to work it out, but are we suffering more than others for players in the hundred?

Really enjoyed the game today !

Much rather focus on the positives (we did win after all!)

Impressed how much Pandya is getting into the game and team. Encouraging the players, advising them about fielding etc.
Possible he could stay for the 4 day games?

Great knock by Yates and Rhodes. I felt we were 20 runs short but overall good bowling effort

Here's my take on the game:
https://deepextracover.com/2022/08/warwickshire-vs-sussex-match-report/
I had two different reports in my head and didn't know which one to write until after the last ball.
