Off topic, but interesting to see Josh Davey opening the batting for Somerset today. Not so much a night watchman as a morning watcher.

Yes, Gregory and Davey taking first knock. One can only assume that there was some SNAFU like half the team being late to arrive. I've heard of that happening in away games but Somerset are at home!

Apparently it's such a green pitch that Somerset decided to protect their top order batters from the new ball against the Sussex bowlers.

What is it about Liam Dawson and us?! We can never get him out cheaply and he always scores a hatful against us!

I agree about Liam Dawson; and let's not forget his ridiculous figures of 7/15 against us two years ago to knock us out of the One Day Cup.

Game is set up very nicely.

Hopefully survive this evening without losing a wicket and a good day for batting tomorrow

Feel like they've got 20 or 30 more than they might have...

Tough little session now.

I think more than 20 or 30, Andy. I think they got an extra 50 there.

Bad decision on Wheel, bad decision on Yates too

Yates one might have been clipping leg, was iffy though. Wheal got a shocker. More questionable umpiring.

No one should be playing that shot..let alone the captain! That was awful and it's given them the impetus

My patience has run out with our captain now, every innings the same

Yep had enough chances.. brainless cricket when you need a captain to show the rest how to play

Total and utter bloody rubbish. One minute we are in charge and by the end of the day it is them who look forward to 11 am tomorrow. Our failure to wipe out the tail has let Hampshire in with an opportunity to gain the advantage. Do bowlers not bowl 'Yorkers' anymore? I would now sooner be in their position as we appear to have given them the upper hand. How often did we have little meetings that seemed to point to a little bit of "So what do we do now". What could have been a good day has seen us hand over the initiative with some mindless cricket. Don't give tailenders any room to hit as it it's what they like, give them a few round the ears, not 'nice line and length bowling'. A poor day really.

I didn't see but presume Davies out playing a brain-dead shot again? Two innings in a row? I don't see how he could have been concentrating after a day keeping and captaining then steaight in to open. No-one should be combining these three roles. Burgess' retirement is clearly very inconvenient. Kai Smith really should be keeping. I mentioned it previous feed but Malik is a bit of a complication too, he's basically taken Smith's batting spot and with a match-winning 49 and a century he's suddenly undroppable.

I do think Kai has a long way to go with the gloves at the moment (I said during the winter he'll need to improve fast), you'd like to think he'll get there though. As a pure gloveman I think even Dandy in the academy is better right now. I must stress im a huge fan of Kai Smith. But at the same time I'm not comfortable with Davies captaining/keeping and opening, it just won't do. It's gonna hurt the team in the long run if he alone struggles in all 3 roles.

Surely we're asking to Latham to take the gloves soon and bat 5? If its not gonna be Kai, it can't be Davies.

Went on the square at lunch time and ground staff were telling me how dry the wicket was. Said something like 200k litres of water put on it but the drainage is so good it just takes it away.

Said they tried to prepare this wicket differently to make it more lively and left it until late.
A good effort by our bowlers but I guess spin more and more vital as game goes on.

I've heard Barwell (and other head groundsman tbf) complain that adverse weather has hampered pitch preparation, now the weathers too dry?!

I think this is a bit OTT and kneejerk but yeah I get the frustration, today could have been so different.

Right. Latham at five is probably the best deal right now, presuming his broken hand can cope with it. I'd still want to see Kai back at some point this year though. I think his batting is fine and he needs FC experience to get better with the gloves.

Andy, no, a perfectly balanced reaction to what I have seen happening so often. Last season we were rarely outplayed despite winning just 1 game in the CC but we were in good positions in so many game and failed to capitalise on it. Today, it was apparent again and I cannot see how it can keep happening and we can again, appear to look so lost when face with tailenders scoring runs against us.

Agree. I thought the inability to clean up a tail was a Robinson-ism which would be improved with a new coach, but it looks deeper.
