In that Yorks/Soms game, it's a bit like a game we played in 2010 v either Yorks (With OHD) or Lancs where the first 5 wickets did nowt in each innings and the last 5 appeared to score a decent amount in each innings. In a low scoring game, this Yorkshire 2nd innings could yet do something if tomorrow is a bit wet and also time and overs used up can't hurt us.
Just spectacular. This team just continues to grow in confidence, talent, and belief.

Plenty of times during that second bowling innings particularly it feels like teams of previous years just wouldn’t have hammered home the advantage and really seen it through.
Ethan Bamber spoke about the team really buying into when to be aggressive and when to hold, and it’s probably testament to that and such a skillful and disciplined attack that we’re able to deliver. That’s just 7 days cricket played out of a possible 12 in the most saturated stage of the season. In the best physical condition, the most dominant form, would you want to bet against us?
If Yorkshire can get out of their game v Somerset with a draw or win, no one would be betting against us.
Excellent run chase. Hate it when sides get bogged down chasing low totals and almost sleep walk into trouble. Have to be proactive. Brilliant, brilliant win. A 2 day win which felt longer if you get what I mean.
Superb bowling as a unit but we just hung on in there and didnt get frustrated even when things weren't going our way. Kai looked a bit ragged either side of lunch but the catch to dismiss Allison was terrific and galvanised us. Excellent work by the openers in the run chase, well batted Zen Malik.

Got wickets against us at Rugby School a couple of years back and people on here rubbished him, was unfair, he's a serious player and has been bowling well for a few years now whilst remaining a handy batter.
I must come clean and wondered about his ability as an allrounder but he is a very good player and who knows how far his talent will take him.

Apparently Essex pulled Snater and Westley out of the game early therefore avoiding the seven day ruling so that they would be available for the Glamorgan game next week.
Hmm, they both spent considerable time off the field on Day 1 to be fair.

Good news for Essex is that Leicestershire have been deducted a massive 27 points for breaching pitch regulations.

Unless Leicestershire win their current match, they will be relegated. That means that they would have nothing to play for at Edgbaston next week. It could work in the Bears' favour, though Leicestershire would have no incentive to try to set up a result if weather intervenes.

This feels monstrously harsh on Leics.
Back onto us, credit to Ian Westwood in all this. People are very quick to slag him off sometimes I feel, so important to give him his dues when things go right. We've improved our 4day cricket so much under his stewardship, and just think of all the senior players he lost before he'd even started (Rhodes, Burgess, Rushworth etc). I think people forget just how bad we were under Robinson, and getting worse, during 2024 (remember Essex at home? A proper 'downing of the tools' from the players). Westwood has us fighting and then some, even last season, its been a remarkable upturn in fortunes.

Agree with this Andy. Has been a big step forward. What I've liked the look of the last few weeks is they've done it when it matters. This wasn't something that could be said when we lost all those white ball QFs in the Robinson years and it's something that applies to all formats. Attacking that target, when we were all nervous about it, is a prime example.
To the race in general, Notts look behind now and they seem to be struggling to bowl sides out again. Didn't realise Pennington was missing so puts a lot on Stone. As to Somerset, have to respect them for their part in a great chase.

Those are good points. I think from Westwood through Barnard and our senior players; Hain, Woakes and Bamber, we aren't the most demonstrative of squads but they did very well to avoid getting distracted today. There was a period where Essex seemed to be getting back into the game although we were beating the bat a couple of times an over. It would have been easy to lose focus but we stayed calm and Barnard in bowled an excellent spell. Post tea we had a run where everyhting went our way which seemed inevitable in hindsight but not at the time. Plus whoever signed Suter did well.
