Simon Kerrigan was saying at a 2nds game in June, that, with Garton getting back to fitness, the plan was for him to return to 1st team cricket, in the 50 over competition - but as a batsman. He explained that injuries, "might prevent him bowling, for much of this summer". So, yes, I reckon he was picked ahead of Malik. Whether his duck yesterday, might change that thinking, we'll see tomorrow!

It's our U18's T20 County Cup Group Final today. We play Kent, at Loughborough. 2.30 start. There are two other Cup Groups, yet to complete their games, I don't know if the winners today, play the other Group winners, for the overall title. It's all a bit confusing, but at least our youngsters are in another Final - well done to the Academy Players & Coaches.

In my post, I said there'd probably be a 2nd team seamer in for the MBC, if Booth and Barker were still unfit (suggesting Taylor or Miller might come in); clearly its going to be Garlick - and a good chance he'd be playing quite a few games if the two B's are missing. He's had a bit of a mixed season for the 2nds, but some very promising performances. Good luck to him.

why not Malik, out of interest? it seems the perfect opportunity to give him the chance to capitalise on the successful breakthrough season in T20 for him, seems weird to replace him with a left field choice who's never batted in the top 6 in first team cricket, am i missing something?

Despite what Andy says, I still think Garton has a chance of being picked for the MBC (certainly in the squad for Tuesday, if not in the starting lineup), but with the departure of Shaikh, I now think Malik will be playing. I think he did enough, with his 55, in the 2nds game with Notts yesterday.

After that 2nd team win against Notts today, Vansh is a nailed on cert for opening on Tuesday (and probably every MBC game) - 217NO (28x4's, 10x6's in 151 balls!). And Malik (55 off 48 balls) & Davies (52 off 49 balls) contributed enough, to pretty much guarantee their places. Only Smith missed out (11). Obviously, without batting, the jury will be out on Garton, so I see it a toss up between him and Kai - especially with Shaikh going.

Notts won the toss and chose to bat, making 352 for 8 (!) off their 50 overs. The only bowler to cone out with any credit, was OHD (10-2-38-4), so a big plus point for him. Taz was battered a bit (68 off his 10 overs), for no return, Bamber took 1 wicket (but for 78 runs off his 10), so I think it fair to say, no plus points for them. Jani was the only other wicket taker.

It's a small ground (obviously helping the Notts score), so it will be interesting to see if our batsmen can take advantage.

Probably the best option he has to have a chance of regular first team cricket, as based on his record with Warwicks he was unlikely to have secured a first team place.

Given his 2nd team batting form for the first half of this season, this is no big surprise, but he has significantly improved in the last few weeks and had some good scores. What we will miss more though, is his Captaincy. The 2nds won the T20 competition last week - and a big part of that, was down to his Captaincy skills.

I really wish him well and hope a fresh start with Leics, will reinvigorate his career and they will give him the backing to reproduce the form he had when chosen as England Under 19 Captain, only 18 months ago.

Quite a few 2nd teamers have recently staked a claim for a place in the MBC. Obviously, Jani & Shaikh, but also Garton, who although is unable to bowl, hit an amazing 141 last week (as an opener) in a 50 over Friendly. A lot of 1st team regulars have already been mentioned, but one name no one has talked, is Keith Barker (I guess he's still injured, but I haven't heard any more).

One more consideration, it has been pointed out on the Second's Forum, that Jake Lintott is back from the Kent loan (he only went for the Blast and has posted goodbyes to them), so he could be available for the MBC. If he is, he has to be a starter

There is still one more 2nd team 50 over Friendly, against Notts on Thursday, I think that lineup and performances, could be significant for next week's MBC game.

Thanks for the info about Jake L, I hadn't realised. Its really good news if he's back in the Bear's 'Den', even if it is only likely to be for the MBC. I think he can still do a job in all forms of cricket, but clearly Management disagree. I do look forward to seeing his wonderful action again for us, even if it might be the last chance. Who knows, perhaps some success for him in this competition, might make 'higher ups' have a rethink - and of course, a possible change of Head Coach at the end of another unsuccessful white ball season, might see Jake retained (I think if fair to say, Westie has never been a fan!).

GG finished on 141, with 15x4's & 8x6's. Gotta be in with a shout of opening in the MBC. Another 2nds Friendly game coming up next week.
