Nah, too easy to pick on two decisions and blame that. If you're going to blame the umpire for screwing up then you also have to blame the players for screwing up. In our first innings most of them got in but didn't convert. In their first innings there were boundaries galore because the bowling was so poor, and we collapsed in our second innings. 6 wickets in 10 overs isn't good enough, no matter the howlers. Nevertheless, we still had a chance even then, if we bowled well. We haven't and lose by 6 wickets; considering the position we were in at the start of play this morning that's poor. All of that isn't the result of 2 bad decisions.

There were 4 other wickets to fall in those 10 overs and that's the real problem. Yes they were shocking decisions but you can't let it prefigure a dismal collapse like that.

We may still find a way, but to lose 6 wickets in 9 overs and give Surrey two and a half sessions is piss poor. That's probably the exact opposite of what the plan was this morning.

The one thing we absolutely had to avoid this morning was being bowled out quickly.

Great stuff today. If we get a wriggle on tomorrow morning we could have 2 (and maybe a bit) sessions to bowl for the win.

Overton's done his foot or ankle. Hope he's alright but could make things a bit easier for us.

He's bowling now.

McAndrew chucking pies here.

Crap shot but that looked very legside to me.

They've had a right old mixed bag of commentators on the Surrey feed today. Apart from 'Churchy' they've had Roland Butcher, Jeremy Coney, and Eva Gray (one of the Surrey women players).

I'm not excusing anything or anyone. He batted pretty well and got out to a good one. That's all.

Dismal from Benjamin.

Davies batted pretty well actually but just got a good one from Lawes, caught first slip.

I'm sorry to see him go. When fit he's one of the very best around. But he's almost never fit and his wages can no doubt be put to better use.

The point about having a proper opening partnership is a good one. I saw a lot of Derbyshire last season and they were terrible - much worse than we are now. I think they had one 100+ partnership the entire season and their middle order was consistently coming in at 15-2. In the close season they brought in Mickey Arthur, who brought in Shan Masood, and this season Derbs' fortunes have massively improved. Masood has been immense so rather than coming in against a new ball and fresh bowlers, the likes of Guest, Du Plooy, Madsen etc have been coming in against a soft ball and tired bowlers. Those three have got 9 hundreds between them.

I don't see anyone else around the squad, particularly batters, who is going to come in and make a massive difference. Something new has to be tried but we've seen all the other options before.

That was as spineless and inept a batting performance as I have seen for a long time. The batting and bowling line ups look all wrong, the body language is meek and everyone seems to be looking at OHD and Sam to get them out of the mire. A big re-think is required.

I was thinking the same. At the moment, the best that can be said is that OHD is doing a good job of protecting Sam.

I think we're in much the better position. There's no reason why we can't get a 50+lead tomorrow. In the context of the game that could make a huge difference. Kent got most of their runs through some lower order slogging; they're no better a batting side than we are.

I'm afraid LE has sawn off both Sibley and Davies there.
