2nd XI friendly against Leicestershire due to start tomorrow (26th) has been called off.
I wonder if the First Team game is also off today. The morning weather forecast is reasonable and I expected a start by now - but Play.com Live scores don't show it.

Cain's interview with the Mail didn't throw up too many surprises, but there was one thing that stood out. We're leaving it late to sign a second Overseas player. I guess a batsman - possibly one who might offer a backup spin option?
Will Porterfield has just gone to Lancashire as a Coach. Another ex-Bear finding a career away from Edgbaston.

Wylie in the XI today too, 2 wickets. I said it last season when they were both performing well that there is no way Warwickshire should be looking to sign another spinner before Wylie and Ali have had a proper go. Wylie looks a real good option in white ball cricket with his batting ability and Ali already has such excellent control.
Hamza surely gets a go in the 4 day side this season at some point.
Wylie took 4 for 42 off his 10 overs, which was pretty good, considering most other bowlers got well thumped!
Tazeem 1 for 46 off his 10.
Wylie opened and got 7, Shaikh, 14, but the batsmen generally couldn't stand up to the Aussie attack.

Made 77 off 49 today.
Where has he gone after Hobart? I can't see any competitions he'd be playing in.
I see Derbyshire have appointed Ben Smith as Batting Coach, in place of Belly. In their announcement, they wish Ian all the best, "in the next stage of his Coaching career". Could that be back at Edgbaston, in place of Frost? If so, it has been a long time, coming.
He's only 34 and played for Northants this season, I wonder if he's retained his registration - he'd be a very useful back up spinner in case of injury.

Looks like Garton got out of Sussex at the right time.
The situation at Sussex right now seems a real mess.
Sounds like Farbs hasn't helped things!
Henry really has so underperformed for us in the last 2 seasons (even for the Seconds), I do think a move away is the best for both parties. I guess Derbyshire could well be the most likely destination.

Having looked on the two Sussex related on-line forums, you're right, BristolBear, that whilst posters on one of them seem glad to see George go, posters on The Inner Circle are on the whole really sorry.
The lady poster who I assume is George's mother says, amongst other comments:
"George asked to be released from his contract with Sussex because he became more and more disillusioned, undervalued and unhappy at the club. So much so that he felt he’d fallen out of love with the game and questioned his future in cricket.
His move to Warwickshire is an attempt to get that love of the game back.
He has signed a 2 year white ball contract but with a pay-as-you-play red ball added on.
One of the main reasons he went to Warks was because of Robbo.
The Cricketer have jumped the gun somewhat. I believe it was going to be announced on Monday."
It's good news that he may play 4 day cricket as well as white ball, otherwise it just looks like a Vitality Blast deal.
With an impending Henry Brookes announcement, I wouldn't be surprised to see Garton also being signed up for a more full time red ball deal.

He's made a ton against the friendliest of friendly bowling today.
True (I did see the videos after I posted that), but putting aside that one performance, he has batted really well in his 2 previous Seconds games. Averaging 70.00 in 3 innings, 140 runs with 2 x 50's (and 1 Not Out). If he'd had more opportunities he might have done even better. I don't know about his Overseas status though, as far as I can tell, he's a Kiwi through and through.

Interesting team out today:-
Amir Khan
Isaac Mohammed
Chris Benjamin (Keeper)
Jakob Bhula
Danyal Khan
Kai Smith
George Maddy
Jake Lintott (Captain)
Henry Brookes
Che Simmons
Sam Atkinson
Yadvinder Singh (Bowling)Possibly one indication of a new Summer contract (depending on Overseas status / visa permits) - Wellington (NZ) batsman Jakob Bhula - who's done really well since he came in. Nikhil Gorantla has also done well in a couple of 2nds game recently, I thought he might be worth another look, but he's not playing today.
Moseley's Yadvinder Singh might also get a Development contract.
No Johal or Garrett (again) says to me that they'll be on their way soon.
Bhula has got a ton (NO) today. Depending on the Overseas / work permit requirements, I think we'd be mad not to consider him for some sort of contract next season.

OH-D: In the first ten years of his career he took 109 first class wickets at an average of 38 and was very lucky to still have a contract. In the next five and a bit, he's taken 205 wickets at 23 and is an automatic first choice. Was this Pop Welch's doing?
Yes, as Andy says, Pop took OHD on in his second stint as Bowling Coach. I remember an interview he gave at the time, saying that Olly needed to remodel his action and he worked with him all one close season and sorted something out.
What an advert for a bowler who perseveres to get things right - but probably more importantly, a Coach who knows what he's doing. It's a travesty, if the rumours about Welch wanting to go, are because of the relationship he had with First Team Coach. Robinson (and to a certain extent, Farbrace, for putting up with it), could have a lot to answer for !

The top 3 has been a huge problem all season. It’s the root of all our batting issues. It’s got to be up there as one of the weakest in the country.
Brathwaite got off a plane Saturday, so what were we expecting.
The rest of the season, Davies and Yates haven’t scored runs since the first couple of games I’m pretty sure. Both have been disappointing in red ball this season and last to differing degrees. Rhodes hasn’t looked up to it for the last 2 years either.
Inevitably Hain has done well and dug them out of trouble along with Mousley, Burgess and Barnard at different stages.
No one is asking or expecting 250 without loss every match. But those middle order players coming in at 150/2 after 40 overs would be such a difference. They’d be able to attack the bowling, have bowlers in second or third spells, an older ball. But too often that top 3 is obliterated within the first 10 overs. So it’s 30 for 3 or 4 after 10, bowlers with a new ball, brimming with confidence in their first spells, tails up, catchers in, and our batsmen are on the back foot not playing their natural game.
And half the time Barnard and Burgess have bowled 20 overs and kept for 70+ overs and they’re back out there inside a session.
It’s set up for the middle order to fail. We need to invest in an overseas number 3 for next season.
Billy Godleman opening the batting for our Seconds today. I guess he's been released by Derbyshire - I wonder if their Batting Coach (one I. Bell) may have suggested we look at him. Belly would know our problems, with opening batsmen!
And Godleman was Captain at Derby last season. Rhodes watch out!?
Leics v Gloucs is one Semi Final.
Run rate should mean we finish ahead of Gloucester, no matter what our result against Sussex (and theirs against Durham). We're already well ahead of Worcester. So a home Semi Final is pretty certain.
PS Hope we don't have to play on that Pershore Road side wicket again!
Booth is in. Team:-
Yates
Barnard
Burgess
Rhodes
Shaikh
Smith
Ethan Brookes
Booth
Lintott
Miles
OHD
Glamorgan won the toss and put us in.
Andy wrote:
Yes I wonder where we stand here. H Brookes won't have played yet either, does he become available?
The 2 match missed rule might apply to Henry, but there's another requirement that is difficult to fulfill, given the Phoenix fixture list - players are not available if their Undead team is playing the same day. Phoenix matches clash with Warwickshire games until next week.
Davies didn't play for Southern Brave again last night, so as that's 2 matches out and Brave don't play on Monday, he could be available for us in the Gloucester game. It's up to Brave if they want to release him though.

ECB regulations state that games should be played within the county, or at a venue with established links.
Kidderminster and Stourbridge are both in Worcestershire, so are not viable options, likewise I can't see Derbyshire agreeing to Warwickshire use their ground in Derby.
The only ground in Worcestershire that Warwickshire could legitimately use would be Barnt Green, which is a wonderful club ground, one of my favourites, and has an excellent wicket, however it does not have the facilities needed to host a first class or list A game.
The rule that a County has to have "established links", to move to a ground outside the County, clearly allows for us to have games in Staffordshire. We have a very close development relationship with Staffs. There must be loads of good quality grounds in the Black Country, or elsewhere. Staffs MC play in Stoke and Stone, I know Wolverhampton, Walsall and West Bromwich (Dartmouth) used to have great facilities - but its been many years since I've been, so don't know what they're like now. Thoughts?
This season Staffs NCCCA team has played at West Brom Dartmouth, Himley and Smethwick in the Black Country. Dartmouth is an ideal venue for the Bears. Great wicket, wonderful spectator & clubhouse facilities and a large captive, cricket loving 'audience' on the doorstep - and literally a mile from the Birmingham boundary! What caps it all, is the facilities there are so good, they've been chosen to host the NCCA Championship Final, in September.
WBD IS the obvious candidate for any Outground game.
While Dartmouth would probably be a wonderful venue for any 'Outground' games, West Brom is not really the ideal place, for 'taking Warwickshire games out of Brum' - it pretty much is in Birmingham (don't tell them that though - you know what Baggies fans think of that idea)! If Staffordshire is a possibility, perhaps further afield in the Black Country (Wolverhampton is an obvious location), or a decent ground further up the County (I seem to remember Stafford and Stone having good grounds and Knypersely near Stoke is regularly used for Staffs game - again, with a large cricket fan base available).
