You get the feeling if Surrey had to bat even 100 more overs, they would be able to. The forecast is for rain from 1-2pm so one way or another, it looks a draw.
Simmons with some chin music and who knows what could happen if Surrey are put back in just before the close. If so, give Simmons the new ball and say, "Get 'em, let them know what's coming tomorrow".
5 down, Jason Roy, they must have been desperate to bring in a player who hasn't had that much CC cricket in the last 4 years. Also, as someone pointed out when he was picked for the Test side in 2019, he hasn't ever batted for more than 3 hours in ANY innings during his career so when he plays a shot like that to get out, it's no great surprise.
One of the dullest pitched I have seen for a while, a bit like the 1970's/1980's ones where Bernard Flack used to get praise for good pitches. Why is a pitch good if it produces dull draws and some of ones from years ago wouldn't have been helped by 4-day cricket either. As Trevor Bailey used to say, "A pitch that produces a low-scoring game with a result and keeps people interested get a points deduction and yet when 500 plays 500, that it is surely a poorer pitch...". I was going to probably give Monday a miss depending on if Sunday is another 'Bat-fest' but tomorrow, the thought of watching any opposition bat all day, does make me not want to go. Malik was superb, scored quickly without having to score many boundaries but he sped up considerably until he suddenly realised there was time for another Warwickshire 100. As for Troughton's remark, seriously, that Surrey bowling attack would have struggled anywhere, they look insipid without Roach, Worrall and Atkinson.
A good day and we need to put up a good fight against these, having been on the end of some atrocious umpiring whilst playing them at The Oval during the last 2 seasons. Strange decision to bowl first, in fact completely weird, maybe they thought 2 undercooked batsmen (Latham, Hain) plus a young guy playing his 2nd game, were reasons that they thought they could work through the batting. If you consider that yet again we got out to a 2nd string bowler like Lawrence and Yates and Hain also gave it away, we might only be 1 or 2 down. Their bowling looks pedestrian without Roach and Worrall so it was good that we took advantage. Come on Bears, 550 minimum. Latham looks good, a proper innings, playing himself in, not panicking if he didn't score and getting better every hour he batted. Could we actually have chosen a worthy overseas player.
A good, strong finish, was hoping that that last ball was going for 4 so that Malik could get to his 50 but what a super little knock that was and after 1 win last season that we had to wait ages for, we now have 2 from 4 games. Well done the lads, a lot to be happy about and a really fulfilling 'Team Effort'.
A good position to be in, a few overs at the end of the day is always tricky and I do not agree with Boycott who always said "You have everything to lose and nothing to gain..", well, 15 runs is a nice little chunk out of the target and the way we stuck to our task when they were just 3 down and looking to post a 220-250 lead, was admirable and holding them to less than 3 an over whilst nipping a wicket out every now and then was a real team effort considering their batting line-up. Getting the last 5 for 62 was important as we didn't then have to wonder overnight, just what we would chase, it's now up to us to get over the line.
JB gone, come on lad that's the spirit, keep chipping away. Would love to see Root out maybe all the Yorkshire team before I come in from the garden, a newly retired man's work is never done.
Not quite 300 but under the circumstances of 47-4, we would take that. A terrific knock from our debutant overseas player, how often can we have said that.
205, well it looks like good conditions for batting but the pitch looks green. Hope our batsmen dig in a bit and that Davies doesn't try to hit everything he faces.
Thought it was a bit of a risk to put in a side containing Lyth, Brook, Root and Bairstow, 30-2 is good but I hope we don't have another ,Let the batsmen off the hook day', the good thing might be that Root and Brook haven't had much cricket and might be rusty, here's hoping.
Does anyone remember that game in 2000 when we got 110 and Notts got 406-0d and we batted out for a draw at 305-8. They batted too slowly, spending 130 overs to get their runs, 3.12 per over and then moaned when the batsmen were offered the light. Yesterday, Notts should have known the forecast and got bowling in the best weather of the game with a lead of 200 but overstretched themselves seeing as they batted on with no urgency and scored no quicker than Saturday. Often better to have time rather than extra runs. Blazing sunshine where I am in Halesowen but it is looking so gloomy at Edgbaston and I have no sympathy for Notts as the weather forecast was spot on.
The umpires should really be saying, "Groundsmen, you have had a long hard time of it trying to get this game started, you really need to have your dinner and have a good sit down at home". In an 'Ealing Comedy' they would do that.
A lot depends on how much rain falls. It it soaks the outfield it is not the choice of the fielding side who would go on in any weather with 4 wickets to get. The umpires will decide and if they think it is too slippery to field in, we stay off. I did mention on on Saturday, I think, that Notts should get 200 ahead and get us back in again. A lead of 270 was excessive as there was never going to be a time when we would have a lead, so why bat on. I have no sympathy with captains who do not look ahead to the weather forecast. Andy Lloyd was master of that, he made some great declarations based on allowing for rain at some point. Against Yorkshire in 1991, he batted on in the 3rd day for just45 mins of sedate batting and when the teams came off, the members thought he was mad giving Yorks 310 in 88 overs but he said there would be rain in mid afternoon, there was, it wiped off 10 overs but still gave us enough time to win.
Met Office site says 80% chance of rain until 5pm.
Makes me wonder why Notts batted until they were all out. If we are 8 down at the close and tomorrow is a washout, then they might be scratching their heads even though you can't/shouldn't rely on an early weather forecast.
I think the best we can hope for today is to bowl Notts out for not much more than a 200-220 lead and hope they do not score too quickly. We then need to bat out the rest of the day and hope the weather forecast for tomorrow is correct. You might notice a lot of 'Hopes' in there, yes that is all I have from this game so far.
Even if the conditions for batting were worse than ours, it's always a lot easier batting in the 2nd innings. The bowlers know they need wickets but have to not concede runs as well and it isn't just a case of 'Do as the opposition did', Notts know they just have to bat time and 50 overs will give them a good lead. Fernando just keeps the tradition of poor overseas choices that the club make, thank god he is not here all season. Notts might even declare at some point tomorrow as Monday looks poor at the moment.
Tomorrow looks like a decent day but Monday looks poor so hopefully we can get some bowling points and a draw, that would definitely do from here as we are not going to get anything for batting.
You get the feeling we will struggle and then conditions will be a lot better when they come in. It might not be but it's something I really hate about the game, we'll see.
