Very pleased to see that Ed Barnard will be captain today, hopefully a much needed permanant change, that will improve the team spirit, development and performance.
Perhaps England need a good solid and steady reliable player like Sam Hain!
Developing the ability to play a long innings, playing all sorts of shots would be essential, not just being a slogger.
It is a surprising one, especially as his batting tailed off later in his career.

The umpire would have been in his usual position when standing at thr strikers end. A position he would have chosen, and used everyday, that allows him the best possible view, but also his safety.
First class umpires wear body mounted cameras, and their decisions are reviewed by the ecb, feedback and coaching will be provided on any incorrect or borderline decisions.
It is impossible to decide a stumping decision from the angle of the camera used for thr live stream, Essex do not appear to have side on cameras. Therefore you have to accept the decision of the professional umpire, who was in the best, side on, position.

Probably the wrong decision after winning the toss, the bowlers have tried hard, but some of the bowling and fielding changes were reactive rather than working from a prepared plan and being proactive.
It is not unknown for opening batsman captains, especially when in poor form, to elect to field first to avoid facing difficult bowlers in overcast conditions. I really hope that wasn't the case today.

They are a "RAW" average, it would take some time to calculate the "moderated" average.
The club is still recruiting a new "media manager", however the job description was prioritising the unwanted competition and political correctness, when what is needed is an experienced sports Journo.
Sadly since Tom Rawlins moved on the media output has been behind that of other counties. Have a looka t our neighbours for an example of good media output.
